As is frequently reported within the trade press, there are considerable skills shortages within all engineering based and high-tech industries in the UK. The Skills Council for Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies (SEMTA) in the UK has identified that, in the Aerospace industry, “a low skills equilibrium exists, and the quality of school leavers does not meet the sector’s requirements.”
In many instances, the lack of sufficient qualified personnel to undertake skilled tasks within an allotted time frame is not only jeopardising current programmes, but risks work being awarded outside the UK, which in turn could inhibit future growth. The industry’s skills shortages present another problemto companies; fear of the personnel they do have being tempted away by enhanced packages. However, one interim solution to both problems is to utilise highly qualified foreign workers.
